Sports Betting in Kansas is Off to a Good Start
In the latest gambling industry news, we’re taking a look at Kansas, the newest state offering sports betting. In its first month of legalized sports wagering, sports betting in Kansas has a September monthly handle of $160.5 million. The number has been on track with the estimates that the state’s regulatory body has set. And considering that the bill that legalized sports betting was passed just this May, its great to see the state allow sportsbooks to go live in time for football season to start.
The sports betting law allows the state’s four commercial casinos to offer in-person sports betting plus three online sportsbooks per casino. Thus, casinos have partnerships with online sports betting companies. For September, there are 6 online sportsbooks open. And as those in the pay per head bookie industry know, the numbers for the handle can even be higher if more online sportsbooks are to go live.

However, as with any new business starting out, a lot of promotions are spent to entice players to join their sportsbooks. According to the law, operators in Kansas can deduct these expenses from their revenue. For Kansas, the total for all operators are at $34.4 million. This amount will decrease as sports betting continues on in the state, while the handle and revenue is expected to increase.
The state has another avenue to earn more revenue as well. The law permits certain businesses to partner with casinos to offer sports betting in their operations. These are bars or restaurants, and usually places that have liquor permits. But the terms of the law are a bit ambiguous. In addition, there are other terms that they will have to determine before they can implement this.
But if you compare the various betting channels from other states, online sports betting continues to get the lion’s share of sports bets, which is why having a pay per head sportsbook will continue to be profitable for quite a long time.
