Maryland Sportsbook Industry Still Has No Launch Date

Its been almost two years since their online sports betting bill, and yet the Maryland sportsbook industry still has not gone live. Maryland voters elected to legalize sports betting back in 2020. And with another round of elections happening later this year, these residents are yet to see a single sportsbook get a license by the state. Online sportsbooks are not just popular to bettors. They are also capable of generating millions in sports betting handle on a monthly basis.

In other states, you can see sportsbook software operators get hundreds of millions in wagers each month. Especially during the busiest time of the sports season. And yet the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission still has not moved much in terms of working towards a launch. Governor Larry Hogan even published a letter requesting the committee to launch sports betting in the state by September 8.

Maryland Sportsbook Industry- What is Happening

The Governor, in his letter, pushed to expedite the launch of sports betting in the state. He is also asking that they provide a timeline so stakeholders will know and plan accordingly. The Commission recently had a meeting, and released a response to the Governor’s request. There was no specific timeline given, but they have updates as to where things are at now.

As easy it is to start a sportsbook pay per head, getting to launch a sportsbook in Maryland seems to be so time-consuming. According to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, draft regulations are 95% finished and will be sent to commissioners next week. There will also be a meeting on June 29 to review and release the drafts. The Agency’s eLicensing platform will also open to businesses who want to win a Class B license. We still do not know if we will see online betting before the NFL season starts, but we certainly hope so.
