Horse Betting Terms to Remember

For the latest in our gambling tutorials, we are giving you horse betting terms to remember. While sports betting has pretty standard wager names (spread, moneyline), in horse racing or horse betting, its quite different. Luckily, betting in horse races is not so hard to learn. Although, when you are looking at the betting options available, you might get confused. Which is why we will be focusing on the different terms and wager types in horse betting.

Horse Betting Terms

Horse Betting Terms to Remember Horse betting, as you probably know, is divided into two types of wagers. We’ll discuss the popular terms and wagers used by type, so its easier to remember. The first is a Straight Wager. Basically, you are betting on one horse. Here are the terms that you would normally see in a pay per head service and its racebook, and associate with straight wagers:

  • Win- When you bet on your horse to win the race.
  • Place- When you bet on your horse to come in either first or second. It has a lower payout than a win, but has less risk.
  • Show- When you bet on your horse to win either first, second or third place.
  • Across the Board- When you bet on your horse to win, place and show. Its also called a combo straight wager since its multiple bets, but just one horse.
  • Win/place or Place/Show- When you bet on your horse to either win and place, or place and show.

The next type of wager that you may see discussed in sportsbook pay per head reviews (those that contain racebooks, that is) are Exotic Wagers. These are wagers where you bet on multiple horses in a single bet. These wagers are harder to win, but the payout is better than straight wagers.

  • Exacta- When you bet on two horses to come in at first and second in the exact order. If you want to bet on them regardless or winning order, then you “box” your exacta bet.
  • Quinella- When you bet on two horses to come in first and second in any order.
  • Trifecta- This is when you bet on three horses winning first, second, and third place in an exact order. Again, you can “box” your trifecta to have them win in any order.
  • Superfecta- this is when you bet on four horses to win first, second, third, and fourth place in an exact order. Of course, you can also “box” this specific wager as well.
