Texas Athletics Program Earned more than $219 Million

The University of Texas athletics program earned more than $219 million in the 2018 fiscal year. On the other hand, it has operating expenses totaling over $206.5 million. The figures are part of the Longhorns’ annual financial report submitted to the NCAA.

It is the second straight year that the University of Texas Longhorns posted more than $200 million in both its expenses and revenues. In 2017, the school had $207 million in operating costs and almost $215 million in revenues.

Although Texas spent less in 2018, its expense total was $31 million more than any other Division 1 school spent on its athletics program. In comparison, Michigan spent $175 million in 2017. Michigan has 29 teams, while Texas only has 20.

Texas Athletics Program Expenses and Revenues

Aside from the operating costs, the Texas athletics program also transferred $10.8 million to the university. It is a common transaction that occurs in the school. In fact, the athletics program transferred around $50 million to the university in the last five years.

Texas Longhorns

Texas got less than $50 million in contributions in 2018. It is an increase of almost $7 million for the contributions in 2017.

Most of its revenue came from the Texas football program with more than $32 million coming from contributions, ticket sales, and other items, including licensing, sponsorships, advertising, and royalties.

The Longhorns’ revenue from its football program was more than the revenue of the athletics program of all except for 12 Division 1 schools in 2017. In 2018, its revenue is the biggest single-year earnings for a public school since Oklahoma State’s $241 million in 2006.

In 2006, Oklahoma State got $211 million in donations with $165 million coming from Boone Pickens. According to the best pay per head site, the school used it to upgrade its facilities.

In 2017, Texas A&M had more than $200 million in both revenue and expenses. However, contributions of around $93 million boosted its earnings. Most of its expenses were due to improving facilities connected to softball, track and field, and football. The school didn’t release its 2018 financial report yet.
