Mississippi Gambling Revenue Jumps in August

The Mississippi Gaming Commission’s latest report for the month of August shows a jump in revenues from Casinos. Casino revenues state that the joint gaming revenue of Mississippi casinos is $181.7 million in August. This is a 7.5% increase over that month a year ago.

August was the first month of legalized sports betting at Mississippi casinos. Also, the operators announced dealing with $6.3 million worth of bets a month ago. For the record, this is $3.5 million, and is not as much as the handle numbers that the MGC issued prior to this month. This is in spite of the fact that these numbers incorporated the first 3 days of September, which was week 1 of the NFL.

Mississippi Gambling and Sports Betting

Of this $6.3 million handle, baseball took in the most action at $3.3 million. Then, football came in a bit over $1.3 million. Sports parlay cards created $1.4 million, while other sports and basketball contributed $154,000 and $97,000, individually.

The state’s sportsbooks guaranteed $645,000 of this revenue for their own. This is for a respectable hold of 10.3%. Regardless of football showing second in the handle rankings, football revenue has over $243,000 worth of bets. Parlay cards posted second, with $233,000 and baseball is third with $164,000.

Mississippi was one of just four US states that detailed a year-on-year casino gaming revenue decrease in 2017. This was indicated by the American Gaming Association’s most recent State of the States report, falling 2% to simply over $2.1 billion a year ago.

This year saw the state begin off with three straight months in which gaming revenue was either level or underneath that months a year ago, yet that was trailed by two months of year-on-year gains before things went south again in June and July. Sports betting was only a small factor compared to other gambling types, but was still a great help in increasing the numbers for August. There is, of course, a larger market for sports gambling, especially if you are a bookie agent.
