Texas Hold’em Poker is one of the most popular forms of poker. It is played in homes, casinos, and tournaments around the world. Its simple rules and complex strategies make it appealing to players of all skill levels.

In our series of poker tutorials, we have given you the basics of poker. Today, we’ll guide you through the basics of the game, from understanding the rules to making your first moves at the table.

The Basics of Texas Hold’em Poker

Texas Hold’em is played with a standard 52-card deck and can accommodate 2 to 10 players at a single table. Some poker rooms will limit the table to a certain number of players. The objective is to create the best five-card hand possible using your two hole cards and the five community cards dealt during the game. Players compete to win the pot, which is made up of chips or money wagered during each hand.

Setting Up the Game

Before the game begins, players take their seats around the table, and one player is designated as the dealer. The dealer position rotates clockwise after each hand. In casino games or tournaments in your gambling software, a dealer is provided, but the “dealer button” still moves to indicate the order of play.

Two players to the left of the dealer post the small blind and big blind, respectively. These are forced bets to start the action. For example, if the blinds are $1/$2, the small blind posts $1, and the big blind posts $2. These blinds increase over time in tournaments.

The Flow of the Game

A game of Texas Hold’em is divided into several phases:

The Deal. Each player is dealt two cards face down, known as hole cards. Only the player who receives the cards can see them.

The Pre-Flop. Once all players have their hole cards, the first betting round begins. Starting with the player to the left of the big blind, players can:

- Call: Match the current bet.
- Raise: Increase the size of the current bet.
- Fold: Discard their cards and exit the hand.

The action continues clockwise around the table until all players have either called the highest bet or folded.

The Flop. The dealer places three community cards face up on the table. These are shared by all players and used to create the best possible hand. Another round of betting begins, starting with the player closest to the dealer’s left who is still in the hand.

The Turn. A fourth community card, known as the turn, is dealt face up. Players now have four community cards to combine with their hole cards. Another betting round follows.

The River. The dealer adds a fifth and final community card to the table, called the river. Players now have seven cards (two hole cards and five community cards) to form their best five-card hand. A final betting round takes place.

The Showdown. If two or more players remain after the final round of betting, they reveal their hole cards in the showdown. The player with the best five-card hand wins the pot. If all but one player folds during any betting round, the remaining player wins the pot without showing their cards.

Hand Rankings in Texas Hold’em

Understanding poker hand rankings is crucial. From highest to lowest, they are:

Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit.
Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit.
Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank.
Full House: Three of a kind and a pair.
Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence.
Straight: Five consecutive cards, any suit.
Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank.
Two Pair: Two sets of pairs.
One Pair: Two cards of the same rank.
High Card: The highest card if no other hand is made.

Basic Strategies for Beginners

These are some of the most effective poker strategies to help you win more in the game. Learning the rules of the game is a good foundation, but it helps to practice the tips below. Keep in mind that each table is a different experience, as you are dealing with different people who have their own strategies. So even if you come in with a plan, be flexible enough to adjust to what you observe on the table.

Play Selective Hands: Don’t try to play every hand. Focus on strong starting hands, like pairs, high cards (e.g., Aces, Kings, Queens), or suited connectors (e.g., 10 and 9 of the same suit).
Pay Attention to Betting Patterns: Players often reveal the strength of their hands through how they bet. If someone raises aggressively, they may have a strong hand.
Understand Position: Being closer to the dealer button (late position) is advantageous. You’ll act last, giving you more information on your opponents’ actions.
Don’t Bluff Too Much: Bluffing can be a powerful tool, but beginners should use it sparingly. Focus on understanding the game before relying on bluffing to win pots.
