Bookie News: Tax Revenue in Sweden Exceeds Expectations

The Skatteverket tax agency (which we will refer to as the STA for an easier reading experience), has a report that the gaming tax revenue for the first half of the year is at around $190.7 million dollars. This amount is twice the amount of government projections last January.

The gambling industry in Sweden is made up of 86 operators. These operators have an 18% tax on their revenue. They also pay a generous amount in the form of licenses and supervision fees. Meanwhile, the Spelinspektionen regulatory body thinks that this is not quite a burden for would be operators. They believe that despite the fees, companies can still cut a profit.

Of course, operators are arguing the opposite, saying that these new rules are not as good to their business. There are still a few more kinks to fix. Some issues between the regulatory body’s issuing of licenses, particularly its validity period, has even reached court.

This is completely normal, and expected, as the new framework has only been in place for half a year. But despite that, the almost double revenue is a welcome surprise that shows how promising the gambling industry is for Sweden.
